Saltmarsh mosquitoes (Aedes vigilax) breeds in the saltmarsh regions of Brisbane. These areas cover most of the coastal part of Brisbane from Brighton to Lota.
The Saltmarsh mosquito is Brisbane’s most significant problem mosquito due to:
- Eggs being able to survive for weeks or even months before hatching,
- millions of eggs that will hatch simultaneously after flooding,
- development from egg hatch to adult in 7-8 days,
- mobility of the adult mosquitoes, spreading up to 10 kilometres in pest numbers,
- capacity to carry Ross River and Barmah Forest diseases.
This mosquito can also be a problem during times of low rainfall due to:
- Breeding in saltmarsh areas flooded by peak tides,
- saltmarsh mosquitoes, responding to dry conditions by hatching in very large numbers
- occasional heavy rain.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
You can protect yourself by:
- Limiting your time in mosquito areas especially around dawn and dusk,
- using repellents,
- wearing loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing that covers you,
- using mosquito nets and screens,
- using mosquito coils and lanterns,
